If you are looking for traditional Thai floating market, my recommendation is definitely the floating market in Amphawa. It is located in Samut Songkhram which is 85 km away from Bangkok. It has been built next to Mae Klong River and its awesome Bangkok day trip and an nice breather from the big city.
History of Amphawa goes back to 500 years. It was originally small community that lived by the river and made their living by trading and agriculture.
Amphawa floating market is very natural and there are many old wooden houses. This makes people feel that they are going back to the old times. Overall the vibes are much more local and chill compare to its bigger brother Damnoen Saduak floating market. This is actually a place where also Thais do day trips on the weekends, so its not just tourist destination.
You can do shopping for fresh seafood, different Thai dishes, fruits, desserts, clothes and souvenirs here. Prices were better than in Damnoen Saduak as this floating market is not only targeted for tourists.
You can either walk in the sidelines of the canal where you can do shopping or shop from boats that pull up offering hot grilled seafood and fresh fruits. You can also buy boat tours for 50THB per person for 40 mins ride (join a group) or hire a private boat for around 400 THB. This was a price I was quoted as local and it might differ between vendors and if you are foreigner.
Best time to visit is late in the afternoon as its boiling hot to walk outside in the day time. Whole market opens up around noon and its open until 8-9pm. In the night time there is also possibility to go see fireflys in boat tour but i did not have time to go see it this time.
